Thank you for visiting the Berkeley High Class of '77 Web Site. We would love it if you would add to the guestbook we are keeping! You may need to RELOAD this page to see recent comments. The comments are listed with the most recent first.

Don't forget to visit the main BHS Class of 1977 web page.

Class of '77 0ne of the great classes of BHS during my teaching years! Do you remember taking Criminal Law? Did those exams kick your butt or what? But it was still a good class, right? Hope all yo out there are doing well. I'm traveling a lot doing volunteer work in National Parks and Forests, building trails, in Yosemite, Alaska and making beautiful places better like Macchu Pichu, Chile, Palestine and Afghanistan. Just got back from Croatia hunting truffles and mushrooms. Good life.

I found this site while looking for the e-mail address of Colleen White (Staggers) who logged on to I am at IBM Research in Tokyo (over 21 years!). Luckily Japanese labor laws make it difficult to lay off regular employees and we have great national health insurance. I go home to Berkeley now 5 times or so a year since my parents are getting old. It'd be a blast to go to one of the reunions if it coinicdes with one of my trips.

Kolya Renne ('77) died Monday, June 30. He posted a sad rant about a deceased classmate on this board some time ago. The posting was quickly removed. I don't think Kolya had a lot of friends and BHS was rarely a happy place for him. However, he was a good friend for a few crucial years in my life.

Hello, All!

I grew up in Berkeley, CA which is where I met most of you, while attending Washington Elementary, King Junior High, West Campus, then moved to North Oakland and attended and graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1977. Growing up, we lived at 1713 Dwight Way, where I recall some friends, like Kim Burgess, Countess Williams (it's a miracle I can recall these names) Lisa Felix, Usana Smith, Curtis (Nakamura?), from elementary school. I was a member of McGee Avenue Baptist Church for about 100 years (until I left for New York in 1999).

Presently, I live in New York, NY (Harlem). Eventually, I will work my way back to the Bay (Area). Still pursuing my dreams :). My daughter graduated from Berkeley High in 1997 and is now living in Oakland. Eventually, I will settle down there; for there is no place like the Bay Area! Good, bad or indifferent, there is no place like it! If anyone knows Kim Burgess or Countess, please let them know I'm looking for them. Thanks and maybe I'll see you at the next reunion.

Shout-outs to all of you! Please feel free to email me. God bless!

BHS Class of 1978 Reunion (August 23, 2008)

Hi All: I went to Longfellow, King, Willard & BHS, grew up in Berkeley (Dwight Way & Allston Way)and went to church in Berkeley for 34 years (Mc Gee Avenue Baptist Church) but I graduated from continuation school at Castlemont (Knight School). I remember all of my childhood friends: Angie Manning, Roy Stone, Terrance Aikens, Donald Sally, Nedra Martin, Beverly Green, Jackie Richards, Kenny Epps, Joy Carter, Harold Watkins and of course, Sharon Samuels (hey gurl!!!) I recently saw Roy Stone and met his beautiful wife, Carmen. I had dinner last night with Anthony Howard from Berkeley High class of '78. He looks absolutely marvelous and has arms the size of my thighs!!! ;-)

I am looking forward to attending the Class of '78 reunion in August 2008 and seeing my old friends. I have lived in Alameda for 16 years and I was in law enforcement for 17 years. I am currently a Human Resources Manager and it is certainly my passion.

If anyone has contact info for the class members of BHS '78, there is a yahoo group set up.

I was also shocked at the locale for our reunion, given the price charged per person. The bar service was non-existent, and water was never served. We were told that there were not enough seats for everyone to sit on while dining, and the server who monitored the buffet was directing us as to the quantity of food to place on our plates. I understand that not everyone has the same financial means, but surely we could have gotten a better deal for our money elsewhere.

Having said that, I was happy to reunite with old friends.

It was so nice to see so many of my living friends enjoy reuniting. I just can not figure out why it was held in a rinky dink restaurant bar in Lafayette. Seventy bucks each for the most pathetic stand in line dinner with no formal tables? Can we get some bar service up in here, Please? And I thought I was in hell.

How about the Claremont Hotel for the 40th? It's located in Berkeley of all places. Then we can enjoy several bars, enjoy the view, and enjoy crashing our drunk asses in a hotel room without having to drive.

Well, all you lovely people, I am sorry to miss it. I have had my bookish weekend here in SoCal, which involved Orange County-reared cheerleaders flying unexpectedly through the air during book readings, etc., but never mind that.

I did catch up with local BHSer Conrad Hurtt ('78), who is working on the next class' reunion, and perhaps I will have to go to their picnic by way of compensation. Unless we have some postscript-like holiday nog gathering later this year.

Otherwise, on to the next one! May we continue to prosper in this mad century of ours... And hey, any similarly expatriated Yellowjackets here in the southland, give a holler...

Glad to see postings from folks I haven't seen for quite some time, like Brad Allen, Paul Lecky, Tom Klatt, Larry Becker, Connie Lim. I've been able to touch bases with Alan Kamada, David Commins, David Sakurai, Reggie Johnson. Hard to believe we are all getting so old!

I doubt I'll be able to make the Saturday night event, but maybe Sunday at Anza? James, I can't update myself on the list because my email address is wrong and you reject me as spam (*sniff*) every time I try to ask your help.

It's good to read all the posts. I hope my hubby and I can make the drive from SoCal and see some faces! :) Be well, everyone!

Thanks Dennis Brown, for keeping me informed of all the future plans for the 30th, witch are now going to take place in two days, but unfortunately I can't get away from work, but I will make it to the picnic. I hope I could 'hook up' with some o'l buddies there. It's funny, my brother came up from LA to attend his 50th just this past summer,BHS re-union, and my older son had just started BHS, freshman, this year 'How Time Flies' It's amazing the places I have ran into BHS alumnis over the years, Las Vegas AV area during an Electronics convention, small town near North Shore, Hawaii, my wife's classmate in Japan, and the less fortunate in the streets of our neighboring city. We truly have a diverse class.

Thanks again to the reunion committee for all their time and effort to make this happen.

Been working on situps for the past several weeks hoping to flatten and firm up the stomach, oh well..... know I'll firm it up through my work on the dance floor! Showing up single so looking for dance partners!
Thanks again to the committee for all of your work. Looking forward to enjoying the fruits of the labor with you all!

How heartwarming it is to read all of your connections. Thanks again, James, for making this possible. Looking forward to a great week-end. Yes, it has been a lot of work for the committee but I'm sure it will be well worth it. Glad to hear you all are doing some cool things ... surviving significant health challenges, giving back to the community, raising families and being good parents, moving about the country and the world, professionals doing your thing ... it's super! I'm proud that Berkeley is a part of my heritage. Those that can't come, you're with us in spirit and thanks for sharing.

Hello everyone. I'm also looking forward to Saturday's event. I was the 'other Michelle,' the real shy and quiet one who was voted Shyest during our senior year (and Most Likely to Succeed). So many of you may not have known anything about me. I probably won't remember very many faces, so i hope those of you who recognize me (and i'm still quite tall) will come up and say hello. And to reiterate the general sentiment, can you believe it's been 30 years??? Cheers. Michelle

Hey Class of '77! Congrats on your 30th!! I remember many of you, as I am from the Class of '78. With a son in the class of '09, I am now the co-president of the BHS Development Group, a 501(c)3 nonprofit group of parent volunteers who raise and distribute money for Berkeley High. We fund or contribute to after school tutoring by teachers, 1st Step scholarships for students who are the first in their families to go to college, the Ultimate Frisbee team, the Mountain Bike team, the cheer squad and MANY other activities/field trips/projects.

The Class of '47 had their 60th reunion this year and raised $4600 for us--I challenge you to better them and set the standard for my class to try to beat next year! BHS is in the process of regaining its national reputation (we moved up almost 100 spots in 1 year on the top 1,500 high schools list in Newsweek Magazine. Please support BHS! Hope to see you at the picnic!

Hello to the class of 77 (plus 76 & 78)!
I don't think I can make this one due to a conflicting work schedule. I hope life is good for everyone as we begin to hit the half century mark. The great thing about the 25th reunion for me was that it triggered memories that have been buried and pack away for a long time. Of course, through the lens of time, the memories have taken on a more favorable tone. I still recognize a lot of the names - Larry Becker, John Latesch, Matt Watson and his lovely wife, Mindy Scharlin, Joseph Lindholm, et al. Many of these people probably also attended Malcom X and Williard (remember West Campus?) but it does start to get blurry the further back I go.

Well, my daughter and son are in high school now and I guess I get live it over again but from the perspective of my parents (the irony of it all).

Mindy Scharlin, I am glad to hear you are doing well. I think we go back as far as Malcom X?

Play Earth Wind and Fire for me (That's the way of the world) and I will thinking of all you in spirit!

Take care,

Wei Huey

Hi Everyone,
I won't make the Saturday night event but I will drag my 11 year old with me kicking and screaming to Lake Anza the following Sunday Afternoon. (it IS Lake Anza, right?) Funny thing, I was in the underground papers talking about Kid's Liberation when I was his age.
We can all laugh about the old days, and the new days, as well as how much grey hair and weight we've gained or lost, and the beach is a perfect place for that. luv, Kevin

Since I will not be able to attend the 30th reunion, I wanted to say HELLO to my BHS friends! Although I have lived in western Nevada for 25 years, Berkeley (the verb) remains in my heart. It was a special time in history and a special school that has affected the arc of my story, for sure. My degree in nutrition from UCB has served me well and I continue to work in and study the field. I have become somewhat of a nutrition advocate and all around pacesetter in these parts. My husband and I are still in the midst of raising teenagers, a full experience. One son decided to attend a the Davidson Academy of Nevada, a new public high school for profoundly gifted students. Families are moving here from around the country to attend this school, so I thought I would put this out, just in case anyone is looking into this. I am happy to be here now and send my blessings to you.

It's nice to see so many familiar names--Becky, Mindy, Jenny, Luther, John, Wei, Keith, Jim, Marcus (4th grade Longfellow), Danny, Daphne, Tom, Erin S, Erin D (the photo you arranged from the 25th sits in my office), Michelle, Marius (back to 5th grade at Longfellow) Connie--and to know that the reunion will take place. Good memories come alive. I'm sorry to miss the 30th. It will be held on the first weekend of the fall quarter here at Oregon State where I teach geography. I've just spoken with Columbus Smith who wants to come but also may not be able to make it. I enjoyed reconnecting at the 25th and would love to stay in touch with old friends. Dear All:
I am sorry to hear the date for the reunion is set for 9/29 as I will be unable to attend. I have a business meeting in Minneapolis that weekend so I can't come to the reunion this time around. I would have liked to come out for the 30th since I missed the 25th since it was held just after I moved to Boston. I am sure it will be a blast - please tell everyone hello that remembers me - and for those of you that remember my big announcement at the 20th reunion, I am alive and well and very healthy. Last year I celebrated 10 years of survival post cancer. I am truely one of the 'lucky ones' and I feel grateful and blessed to be alive each day.

It is nice to see all the names and messages from people who are signing the Guest Book. Glad to see Mr. J. Laetsch is still around....would have loved to see him after all these years (I hope you are hanging in there, John.) Glad to see some other East Coasters are around (Stacey and Erin). We should all rendevous since we only live a few hours from each other!!

All the best to everyone....cheers, Mindy

A play about Berkeley High!? Apparently so. I'm having quite the Berkeley afternoon, here in sweltering L.A. - watching Cal ahead (so far) of Tennessee in football, and as I go through mail, I open some U.C. stuff, to find out that a Berkeley High-reared playwright named Itamar Moses is getting a play called 'Yellowjackets' workshopped on the U.C. campus. This 'young man' was *born* in '77, and went to BHS, and then points east, became a playwright of some growing renown, and now has written a play about Berkeley High. And it's free!

Sept. 15 at 8, or Sept. 16 at 2, in the Durham Studio Theatre at Cal. Did I say free? Q&A afterwards!

There's more info online on the Cal Drama Dept's website (tho' I can't link from here...)

You folks still on the auld sod, let us know how it is! Or what it is!

I feel reallly awkward asking this, but after talking to a friend on the committee, it was suggested I sort-of ask for help with this: I really want to be able to make it to the dinner as well as the picnic, but being on a fixed income, all I can really afford is amtrak and the cost of the dinner, which would rule out a hotel stay cost-wise, so if anyone has an available couch for that night? (whew, that was hard to get out). Thanx. :) OR- if anyone is coming down from Davis for a carpool maybe?

While I understand the desire to have the reunion in Berkeley, I want to discourage complaints about where the event is being held as it's not a constructive use of energy. The committee did the best we could with the limited time we had to pull together a reunion event, while also trying to keep the costs down. The most important thing seems to be to reunite and celebrate together in the same room, particularly since we're now spread out across the Bay Area and beyond anyway. Thanks for understanding.

Well, dang. I am still writing books for young readers on the march, and I'd obliged myself to these two fests some months in advance. Sigh. Well, have a splendid time everyone. Does this mean on to the 35th? I've been looking forward to the 30th Reunion for some time, especially since I missed No. 25. I very much appreciate the work of the Committee to put this event together for the rest of us. Thank You! That said, am I the only one who thinks it's WIERD for a BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL class reunion to be held in the suburban town of LAFEYETTE? How did this happen? Is there no Berkeley restaurant able to host a party for several hundred? I mean, why stop in Lafayette? Come up to Davis and have it here!

Clearly some very thoughtful people have worked hard to find a good venue. And I'll show up in Lafeyette if that's where it's at. But I think BERKELEY is where the BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL REUNION otta be.

Now - For entertainment. Can we get Tower of Power to play? Earth Wind and Fire? Donna Summer? I heard she sang at a Governor's gig earlier this year.

Oh - And please be sure to make the name tags with BIG print so that those of us with failing eyesight don't have to embarrass ourselves by squinting at someone's lapel trying to remember who in the heck they are - because they sure LOOK familar - even after 30 years of wear and tear and good livin'.

Looking forward to this event. Cheers - Jim McKinney

Hope everyone has a wonderful 30th. Can't attend this one. Did the 10th and the committee work, with Mindy (hey, Mindy-Mind), Sunshine, Willa, Dennis, Chris -- all of you! We had such a great time, with our gettogethers at each others' homes, camping trip and swimming, carving our school and graduating year (BHS '77 -- YEAH!) on a picnic table, and posing for pics in the bleachers at BHS, yes? We were 27ish then and, wow, I thought I'd live in the Bay Area forever. My family's still there, so we visit, but Tod, the kids and I now are in Chicagoland. Wishing we could be there; we'll be thinking of you all.

In the meantime, I'm with James: Only 500-sumpthin' days of Bush remaining.... :)

Hi all... I just got a call from Michelle Coleman who was meeting with the gang to look into a 30th reunion. She is thinking that it will be September or October this year, but it is not certain yet. She says she is looking into the possibility of a family outing, followed by a no host arrangement at a bar/restaurant. I amsure she would like help, so if you are able, let me know or call her directly. You can send me email through this website. Meeting with Michelle were Connie and Wanda.

Hi all

It's been 30 years!!! WOW!!!

I have been exchanging e-mails with James Reeves, and to our knowledge no one is yet working on a 30th reunion.

I am interested in work to put one together but I can't do it alone. Please respond to me, or here in the guest book if your are:
Interest in helping put it together
Interested in attending.
If you're interested in attending. please advise if you would prefer:
A more formal evening funtion
A picnic type event
Both, as we have done in the past.

Thanks in advance

More wist! More rumination and sensation of time utterly flying! Here I was, checking in as a run-up to next year's putative 30th reunion, and in scanning the "recent" messages, came upon my own post from... 2003! It's been a fast three years... I'm still writing columns and books (on my 5th "Danger Boy" book now, actually), still divorced, still missing Northern Cali, but mostly, still raising my two own "danger boys", now 12 and 7. Would love to hear from any BHS/School of the Art folk similarly expatriated to this large town south of Bakersfield...

Wow! Thanks to the web I'm caught up in a memory vortex! I missed the 25th (I was told about it a few days before it happened), but I'll be at our 30th!?!

Quickly summerizing almost 30(!) years of history: after graduating, earned B.S in Electrical Engineering at Howard University in Washington, DC... spent 6 years in Cambridge, MA earning Ph.D. in same at MIT... moved to New York, working in investment banking... fell in love (for the umpteenth time :-)), got married, have two young children (daughter, 7; son, 3). I'm back home about 6 times a year... questioning why I ever left... Phew... There's actually more to the story, but no room here. Anyone from the class of '77 (or any other BHS class, for that matter) is welcome to contact me. See 'ya in 600 and change years.

i ran into a fellow in gerlach, nevada by the name of tressiter. claims to know several people there at bhs class of 1977 including andy hess. tressiter said he is extremely proud to be a clunker, but he does not know how to sing clunker song. i never understood how one could be very proud to be a clunker and not know clunker song. perhaps someone there at the reunion group can get ahold of that jail-bird andy hess and ask if he can teach tressiter clunker song. by the way-there is a great little restaurant there in gerlach, nevada called bruno's country club. anyone going to the burning man should stop in at bruno's and ask for tressiter. ask if that convicted felon andy hess has been able to teach trressiter clunker song. and if you are ever in my neighborhood of eastern utah on interstate 70, stop into my hometown of thompso (about 30 minutes west of colorado) and look me up. only about 30 of us live here so everyone knows me. i can tell you more about tressiter and let you in on some prison stories about andy hess

Just thought I'd write a note to remind people that this site is mostly automated ... the best way to make sure that your contact information is known so the reunion will find you for the next one is to register your name on this site. The registration is straight-forward and takes only a few minutes. Simply go to the Registration page and click on the link to Add Your Contact information. If you are already registered and want to update your information, find your name in the list and click on your last name. From there you can enter your password to get into the record. If you forgot the password, click on "forgot Password" and enter your email address, the system will send it to you via email. If that all fails, send me an email (use the link on the site) and I can help.

Writing your name in this guestbook will *NOT* insure you are notified via email about the reunion.

Hope all is well with everyone in BHS land!

Hey fellow BHS graduates. This board has been very quiet. Doesn't it seem like the years are just flying now? I am trying to grow old "gracefully" and it is always fun taking a short trip through memory lane - High School. Why are those 3 years so significant in one's life? I don't know but I guess it is considered one of many milestones in our journey. I don't have any pearls of wisdom, but I have found that trying to let go of my ego, has led me to become more content and humble. Caring about other people (family and friends) will invevitably bring more joy and happiness.

Happy Holidays to all and lets wish for Peace in 2005.

Dear Classmates: I am troubled by the disrespectful postings about Phil Agretelis and Becky Chambers. If this site has a Webmaster, please delete the postings by Kolya Renee. Evidently, this person needs some remdial lessons in human decency. I swam with Phil in 7th to 9th grades, and found him to be a spirited, energetic and one heck of a friendly guy. My sympathies to his mother (who coached us at Willard) and his family. Becky was my neighbor and a person who merits much more respect than offered on this website. It seems to me that some people have not experienced too much personal growth since high school. This Kolya Renne person had no idea of what Philip Agretelis could have become or what he was like when he passed away (so tragically early in life). I remember him in kindergarten. I also remember Abby Bellah. Life is a gift and some people don't get as long of a chance. Here is to hoping that people keep working at compassion. There is enough war, violence, and mean spirit in this world.

Phil Agretelis died in an inner-tubing accident on a river near Chico State while in college there. The year was 1983, I believe...a long time ago. He was with his fiance.....he was going down a rapid, went under, and never came up. Very, very sad. He was a neat guy who never got to see how is life would turn out. He is missed by many of us.
